Ciudad de México.- El gobierno de Cuba negó la entrada al secretario general de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), Luis Almagro, quien viajaría a La Habana para recibir este miércoles el premio “Oswaldo Payá Libertad y Vida” que también sería entregado a Mariana Aylwin, a nombre de su padre el desaparecido ex presidente chileno Patricio Aylwin.
A Mariana Aylwin le fue negada también la entrada a Cuba, así como al ex presidente de México Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, invitado a la ceremonia de premiación.
En una carta fechada este día y difundida por el organismo hemisférico, Luis Almagro explica a Rosa María Payá, presidenta de la Red Latinoamericana de Jóvenes por la Democracia y organizadora del premio que lleva el nombre de su padre, las trabas que enfrentó por parte del gobierno cubano para negarle la entrada a la isla.
Detalla que le fue rechazada su solicitud de visa para el pasaporte que tiene como presidente de la OEA y también su pasaporte como ciudadano uruguayo, que no requiere visa.
Refiere Almagro que autoridades del gobierno de Cuba le manifestaron su “asombro” por su presunto involucramiento “en actividades anti-cubanas”, por lo cual, se le dijo, su solicitud de visa era considerada “una provocación inaceptable”.
Ante ello, respondió que su único interés al aceptar la invitación para ir a Cuba fue “facilitar el acercamiento de Cuba a los valores y principios del sistema interamericano, tanto en lo que refiere a la defensa de la democracia como a la promoción y respeto de los derechos humanos, al tiempo de expandir los logros de Cuba en la ciencia, salud y educación a nuestra región.”
Luis Almagro señaló también que “mi presencia y la ceremonia del día 22 de febrero no se diferencia de otros eventos similares que tienen lugar en otros países de la región y en los que he participado y que se realizan sin que el gobierno los apoye necesariamente, pero sin censurarlos, porque son parte de la tolerancia de los sistemas y valores democráticos”.
Finalmente, el presidente de la OEA expresó su preocupación porque el gobierno cubano ejerza represión en contra de los organizadores de la ceremonia de entrega del premio “Oswaldo Payá Libertad y Vida”, lo cual sería “absolutamente injusto e indeseable”, al tiempo que reiteró su deseo de “seguir trabajando en el marco de cooperación establecido entre la Red Latinoamericana de Jóvenes por la Democracia y la OEA”.
