El enviado especial de la ONU para Siria acogió con beneplácito el anuncio de un alto el fuego entre el Gobierno del país y los grupos armados de oposición, que entraría en vigor la medianoche del viernes 30 de diciembre en todo el territorio sirio.
Staffan de Mistura recordó en un comunicado que una de las piedras angulares del marco de trabajo planteado por el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas en 2015 es precisamente un cese de hostilidades completo.
De Mistura confió en que la implementación del acuerdo negociado por Rusia y Turquía como garantes ayude a salvar la vida de los civiles, facilite la entrega de asistencia humanitaria en Siria y allane el camino para que las negociaciones de Astana sean productivas.
Las conversaciones en la capital de Kazajstán entre el Gobierno y los grupos armados de oposición no tienen una fecha definida pero se espera que ocurran en los primeros meses de 2017.
El enviado especial consideró que el acuerdo de alto el fuego también deben contribuir a que las negociaciones entre los sirios que auspiciará la ONU el 8 de febrero próximo sean inclusivas y productivas.

Cuatro millones de personas que viven en Damasco y los alrededores no tienen acceso a agua potable desde el 22 de diciembre, según informó la Oficina de la ONU para la Coordinación de Asuntos Humanitarios desde la capital siria.
