Xalapa, Ver., 9 de septiembre de 2016.- El Descabezadero, en Actopan, es un área de recreación, conservación ecológica y educación ambiental que además funge como un reservorio natural de especies regionales, tanto de flora como de fauna.
Bajando el río se observa una exhibición de reptiles, boas constrictor conocidas en esta región como mazacuatas, que se alimentan de pequeños mamíferos y aves. Metros adelante se ven algunas iguanas.
También hay ejemplares pequeños de cocodrilo de Morelet o cocodrilo mexicano, especie que se encuentra en las zonas pantanosas de esta entidad, animales carnívoros que llegan a alcanzar hasta tres metros de longitud. En un aviario hay loros de cabeza amarilla y un par de guacamayos, aves en peligro de extinción.
De la parte más alta se ve el nacimiento del río Actopan con su tonalidad turquesa.
En el descenso, antes de llegar a la ribera del río, una cascada de espuma blanca da un toque de frescura. Más adelante encontramos una poza donde los visitantes gozan de la frescura de estas aguas cristalinas. Este lugar es conocido como La Isla, ya que por un lado pasa el agua de este enorme manantial y, del otro, el río.
Cuenta con tirolesas de distintas alturas y distancias para quienes gustan de cumplir ciertos retos deportivos.
Continuando por la ribera del río y cruzando algunos puentes llegamos a la cascada La Escondida, conocida así por ser solo una cascada temporal, que sólo se disfruta en la época de lluvias.
Este centro recreativo ecológico también cuenta con servicios de hospedaje con cabañas y servicio de restaurante.
