En México, alrededor del cinco por ciento de los niños y adolescentes presentan Trastorno por Déficit de Atención (TDA), pero su detección y diagnóstico tarda de tres a cinco años porque su comportamiento se confunde con el de menores criados de manera inadecuada e hiperactivos.
El TDA se puede detonar durante el embarazo por tabaquismo, alcoholismo o consumo de drogas. También pueden desarrollarlo los menores que presentan asfixia perinatal, bajo peso al nacer, prematurez o cuyas madres enfrentaron disfunción familiar durante el embarazo. Otros factores de riesgo son la edad materna, es decir, tener hijos antes de los 18 años o después de los 35.
El TDA es una condición que genera conflictos en casa, porque los infantes se tardan mucho tiempo en elaborar la tarea, son distraídos, pierden cosas y tienen malas calificaciones, situación ante la cual los padres se desesperan, piensan que los niños los retan y, en consecuencia, les exigen mejoría sin saber que es una cuestión que va más allá de rebeldía.
Los menores con hiperactividad, generalmente se brincan la autoridad, no respetan límites ni reglas, a veces son agresivos, presentan depresión y trastorno de sueño.
El TDA es el padecimiento más sobre y sub diagnosticado, porque si los niños tienen mayor actividad en uno o dos días, se cree que son hiperactivos. Por otro lado, muchos piensan que están mal criados y con regularidad culpan a las madres que trabajan por “desatención”.
El tratamiento es multimodal e individualizado.
