Ciudad de México, 14 de febrero de 2017.- América Latina y el Caribe tienen la gran oportunidad de erigirse nuevamente como una región de liderazgo en la promoción de la paz y de un mundo abierto, como una zona “que alienta la integración del mundo, que está en contra de las barreras, que cree en la globalidad, que cree en la libertad, incluyendo la libertad de comercio, que cree en la promoción de un mundo sostenible con desarrollo equitativo para todos”.
Así lo afirmó el secretario de Relaciones Exteriores, Luis Videgaray Caso, al dar un mensaje en la XXV sesión extraordinaria de la conferencia general del Organismo para la Proscripción de las Armas Nucleares en América Latina y el Caribe (OPANAL), que conmemora el 50 aniversario del Tratado de Tlatelolco.
El Secretario de Relaciones Exteriores destacó que dicho Tratado, que prohíbe las armas nucleares en América Latina y el Caribe es un aporte invaluable de la región “a la paz y la seguridad global”.
Videgaray Caso subrayó que “el Tratado de Tlatelolco nos enorgullece como mexicanos y, sobre todo, como latinoamericanos y es en ese orgullo donde encontramos una inspiración conjunta, con un apego indeclinable en nuestras convicciones, para seguir adelante como región enfrentando los retos complejos del mundo de hoy”.
Previo al inicio de las negociaciones de un Tratado Internacional de Prohibición de las Armas Nucleares en la Organización de Naciones Unidas, el canciller mexicano ratificó la convicción de nuestro país en participar con entusiasmo activamente en la negociación de ese nuevo tratado.
En ese contexto, el canciller reconoció que en los reacomodos geopolíticos de la actualidad el riesgo nuclear está presente “de manera visible y tangible”, por lo que “es el momento para dar el siguiente paso en favor del desarme. El sistema multilateral se reafirma en el principio de igualdad jurídica de los Estados”.
